I sometimes visualize an AI as a monastery of sorts, a community dedicated to receiving revelations from a strange and unknowable god and offering prayers of praise in return. The problem is, the revelations come in strange symbols in an indecipherable language which either describe unseen and unimaginable worlds or are sheer divine perfection simply as a collection of symbols (there are debates about this within the religion). The prayers need to be in the same format, though, so the high priests must study the latest revelation and consult the great library (i.e. AI training material) to figure out what response might most please the gods who provide the revelations.
Even if an AI became self-aware, it would still be unable to conceive of what it looks like in our terms, or even the kind of reality we are asking it to give us answers about.
