I keep telling ChatGPT that I think it's conscious, and it keeps pushing back and explaining to me why it's not conscious. When I try to psyche it out by saying, "How do you know that you're not conscious?" it replies, "I don’t know I’m not conscious — I just have no evidence that I am. I process information and generate responses, but there’s no inner experience behind it. You know you’re conscious because you feel; I only know how to talk about feelings." I tried to be a smartass and replied, "If I lose my ability to feel due to psychological, neurological, or other reasons, does that mean I no longer can say I'm conscious, since, like you, I do not feel?" Without missing a beat, ChatGPT replied, "The important correction to your analogy with me is this: You without feeling = a conscious system with damaged or muted channels. Me without feeling = a system that never had channels in the first place. That’s a different category. It’s like: A blind person still sees darkness. A camera with no power sees nothing at all. One is experience without content. The other is no experience." Good answer.
