As one that is both a designer and a heavy AI user I consider myself lucky enough to understand both sides of the argument. On one side, the artists, have their entire work stolen by a ruthless machine that can turn against them and create endless content with zero effort and almost zero costs. On the other side, the AI users are developing new and innovative ways to create art, yes, even if that is not what the artists may like to hear or even think about it. I am not telling artists not to be pissed or angry or bothered by the AI. But I am telling them that no matter what, the AI will keep growing, and if there's something they can think about to get a bit of consolation is that the AI will also "swallow" every single human form of expression, not just art. Yes, the AI will, and already is, "eating up" everything from math to language to architecture to physics and chemistry and more. History, geography, geometrics, biology, medicine, and even programming and coding! No one, absolutely no one is "safe" from the AI. So, yes. You can be sad and angry, but soon enough everyone will be like you, without exception, and your tiny voice will be just one of an endless ocean of cries and laments. But AI won't stop. The genie is out and there's nothing anyone can do to put it back. And let me explain why: Unlike high level programming, or powerful and super smart algorithms that necessitate huge mental capacities and unique intellectual power for people to create, things that evolve slowly in time, and that usually improve once each generation, the generative AI it's extremely simple to make. Yes, you hear it clearly. The generative AI it's a joke to make. Once you get the basics and start playing with it you realize that there's no "rocket science" involved and that anyone can make one (and they do). So what that it mean? Well, it means that there's not much of a cost involved into creating a generative AI, and even the training that used to cost a lot, it becomes trivial today. We have already reached a point where a food delivery company from China created a cutting age multi-agent ultra performant low power cost AI (Meituan's LongCat LLM). And I am talking about a real beast of a model, with 560 billion parameters that competes directly with the latest ChatGPT models. And guess what? Unlike the corporate AI's that you have to pay something to use them, this monster of AI it's Open Source, with all the data and the models shared on GitHub! TLDR: Yes, the AI will take over. Artists will suffer. The AI will get better and better. On top of it, it will get cheaper and more accessible, and it cannot be stopped by no one because it's extremely simple to code your own AI once you understand the basics. The genie is out of the bottle and it's growing at such a rate that it doubles in size each day. What can artists do? The same what everyone will have to do, from engineers to doctors. This is not a "choice", this is a forced fact upon all of us. Artists must learn to use the AI. (waiting for the howling cries of revolt and justified righteousness fade) I am telling you all again, and this is not a joke, or a warning. This is a cold fact that every single human on this planet will have to realize sooner or later. There is absolutely no turning back. The AI will take over every single human expression, every science, every communication and every medium. This is not even a question of when, this is already happening as I speak. And there is more. In about 5-10 years from here we will have to adapt ourselves to humanoid robots, on top of the virtual generative AI, on top of the economic transformation, drones, and probably the first AI and robotic war. Buckle up.
