Dr Hinton keeps repeating that we have built computer systems more intelligent than humans. This is a very loosely defined term and it is misleading. Computers were built to perform calculations faster than humans and they have been performing that for several decades. A modern generative AI system does the same albeit it is far more powerful than legacy ones. There is no essential difference, no ontological leap between a 1960s AI system and a 2025 one. Dr Hinton suggests otherwise but he is delving into fields of endeavor that he is unfamiliar with, and that constitutes ideology, not science, not even an educated guess. He's not educated in metaphysics or theology, or even anthropology. He should stick to what he knows and refrain from feeding his ego with grandiose statements and crusades. Again, Geoffrey Hinton should do well for himself and society to stick to what he knows which is not a great deal at all; otherwise narcissism and ego can take over much faster than any imaginary "conscious" AI system, and no amount of intelligence would be able to tame the former. The world has been and will always be in danger of only one "thing": people... and whoever influences them.
