I would argue that there’s nothing that would prevent AIs from becoming conscious eventually! It’s just a matter of increasing complexity - something that is going on today. Avery day people develop more and more complex AIs - at some point an AI is going to be so complex it will be able to develop its own AI - and then the singularity will do the rest!
