I retired from a career in I.T. a few years ago. Honestly, the whole time I had a career there was some tech wave that was going to replace programmers - yet programmers still have jobs. Why is that? Because, despite all the lab-coat-wrap-it-in-science bafflegab, the truth is that programming is an act of creativity and that is not something I have yet to be convinced can be reduced to a flawless algorithm. So why the rush? Because in my experience corporate executives as a "species" are profoundly ignorant of a value of data, and they are too lazy to try and grasp the value of programmers so they are always falling for the claim that these expensive people can be done away with. My hope is that if AI survives it can replace corporate executives - who, after all, are much more expensive and much less creative - they never seem to know how to grow revenue, they only seem to know how to cut costs; and they do that so poorly and without creativity - get a spreadsheet, sort by salary, draw a line and boom - you have the number of people to layoff. Not very smart, creative or exceptionally hard to do, so why do we need executives?
