Good stuff but I think his argument falls down when he first addresses if LLMs have knowledge. It's "latent knowledge" vs knowledge in the philosophical and applied sense. LLMs lack propositional knowledge, practical knowledge, and even acquaintance knowledge, though they fake it quite well. LLMs often spew out false or made up information. It lacks metacognition. Though he redeems his argument in the purple list, not understanding the world is a biggie. I doubt that LLM will ever achieve qualia. I'm in the "Bitter Lesson" camp in that LLMs will hit a dead end. But don't bet against AI because there's much more than NLP. Consider the fields of material science and epigenetics. I think that ANI, or artificial narrow intelligence will have bigger impacts on enterprises and at the macro-level while LLMs can help individuals learn and adapt faster in a rapidly changing world. It will also do irreparable harm by coaxing many to abdicate agency and lose critical thinking skills). But I agree that we shouldn't bet against AI. Just be more skeptical of LLMs.
