While it is true that some artists felt that way about photography, the truth is that some artists immediately made use of it to inform their paintings. That is, they used photographs to help them lay out paintings accurately. This wasn't widely known back then, perhaps, but it's been a well-known aspect of art history since well before I was born, and I'm old. Some artists considered it cheating, the way some artists get upset over people tracing images. I've been an artist and a photographer since the 60s. I agree that what the AI bros are doing is extremely dishonest. My online images these days are protected, but some of them have probably already been stolen by AI companies before I moved it all.
The Midjourney CEO is bad at lying. Living artists tend to place their art online in places that allow prospective clients the means to contact them. Art in other places, where the artist is not involved with the site in any way is still copyrighted work. If the people who own the site are using stolen art, that doesn't give anyone the right to steal it from the thieves.
