It is not particular new that even professors cheat. I am not convinced by a couple of individual examples that a lot of professors/researchers cheat, as the video implies. “Everybody cheats” is a bit click-baity.
It is true that just having the degree is a motivation/incentive, but you are ignoring that a degree is valuable beyond just the status and prestige or that it shows one complies and has perseverance. Surveys show that employers are looking for skills like communication skills and critical thinking. The degree is seen as an indicator of such skills, however imperfect. That’s why degrees unconnected to such skills (the degree mills you mention) don’t come with the same status - or many more people would go for it.
The case of the prof using AI but banning it for students is maybe a double standard but not cheating - and an example of the litigious American mind.
Btw.: tenured professors do not have lifetime job security, they can be fired for financial reasons.
