The problem is that the copyright laws have so clearly been holding us back, the hiding of knowledge and the fencing off and sticking behind paywalls of information is what has really hurt our society as a whole. Let me explain what I mean by this. When you look at the way societies develop it is cities where innovation comes from that propel society forward. There is decades of studies that prove this across cultures and across continents the larger the grouping of people the easier idea's and information is distributed the quicker society develops. Then came the copyright laws with very good intentions but much like patent laws they have been twisted and corrupted to benefit a very small number of people. For the most part these laws protect very large organizations from smaller startups regardless if this is in the technology, science or music industries for instance if you do not have the massive might of the copyright and patent maffia behind you you stand almost no chance. What we see now is that even bigger fish came along with even deeper pockets and they wisely scooped up everything they could get their hands on in order to produce AI systems that are able to outsmart the vast majority of people in many ways. Certainly not in all and humans that are even slightly creative can make the AI's look downright idiotic but in many cases we see these AI's able to help move the needle of innovation at a rate that we never thought possible. The reason these AI's are able to do so is that they managed to find a way to access the knowledge and information that was (mostly) publicly available and combine it all into one vast pool of information and knowledge that is easily accessible. I understand that there is resistance but for human kind to really move forward we will have to accept that the nonsensical fighting against the sharing of knowledge and information is having the opposite effect. Another very simple example, the rise of Linux and the fall of Windows in the operating system space. Why is that, simple one has had a relatively speaking limited pool of people that were able to access and work with the knowledge (Windows) and the other allowed to world to see and work with that same knowledge. One got stagnant and stale was unable to keep up and could not adopt fast enough to the demands of the worldwide userbase where the other was easily able to do so and sees major innovations happen at a very rapid pace. This is exactly what AI is doing for us. Now I am not saying shut up authors and and artists or anything like this what I am saying though is that we will need to reform now information and knowledge is shared. Expensive paywalls, walled gardens and a century of ownership by a massive corporation is not what our society needs.
