I don't know why anyone is surprised by this. People engage and respond most to controversial information so it naturally follows if LLMs are privy to consuming everything written on the internet that the most controversial inflammatory remarks will be the cream that rises to the top.
The LLM's learning process is simple - it responds to prompts by determining which word is most probable to follow a given sequence of words. Language is reflective of how human beings communicate and engage with each other. The LLM's responses aren't reflective of an inherent malevolent entity, it's a product of a math problem. The malevolent entity it's reflecting back at us is us because it's learning our behavior through everything we've written and engaged with.
