GAI is about as far off as the mastering of psychology. If we can’t reverse engineer intelligence despite having plenty of biological hardware and observable software that has been studied to various degrees since the earliest records of human history, it’s likely not going to change until we either recreate human intelligence, make a new and improved form of intelligence, or understand human intelligence to such a degree that the prior two are simple.
This is why I avoided the easy way when I was choosing marketable skills and education to pursue. Not too much sympathy for someone who couldn’t see that reading an excel spreadsheet wasn’t going to get automated when programmers figured out how to transfer data from excel into their program
