Data centers consume land because of the large footprints of the physical buildings. Data centers consume extreme amounts of water to cool the servers. Data centers consume so much electricity that Big Tech is largely abandoning any semblance of responsible energy use. AI data centers are such a drain on local utilities that rates are being increased for all users. Households are facing untenable increases in electric rates at the same time state and local govts are pushing the purchase of electric vehicles, electric household appliances, and electric heating systems. . Rural areas are under siege from high voltage power line construction for the benefit of AI/ data centers. Farms and rural land (even conserved/ protected land), homes, and businesses are being seized through eminent domain for the benefit of utility companies which rolls uphill to benefit AI/ Big Tech. Land owners lose property value and wealth. The land under the high voltage lines is rendered useless and uninhabitable. Neighbors of AI data centers report loss of property value, wells drying up, constant noise and vibrations. For data centers powered by gas turbines (because electric service is not available in that location), neighbors report air pollution so severe, that rates of asthma and COPD are occurring at unheard of rates.
