@SenatorSanders, what about a society where its core definition of success is the collective quality of life and freedom of choice that humans in that society have?
Protecting the current concept of work, money, and ultimately the continued concentration of value/profit feels like not enough in the face of AI technology advancement. Especially given that AI was initially trained on the collective knowledge of humanity. I feel like it's the job of governments at this point to make sure that the benefits of AI are shared. That seems like a much more logical direction that trying to counter or restrain humanity's desire to advance by making factory jobs for humans or whatever else. Good luck explaining your desires to countries like China that you want to keep people in traditional jobs and stop the advancement or use cases of AI and robotics. It's the space race, but with more consequence.
I thought Bernie would be the first to push for a society that mimics the best parts of what we see in later Star Trek series like ST: The Next Generation. 8:20 I'd personally think that people when given choice can come up with their own forms of "work" and purpose that are not what we traditionally consider as work-for-money right now. Go ahead and ask people if their current work is what they would do if their needs of quality food, a decent house, reliable transport, good healthcare, and some entertainment were met. You'd get some people saying yes, but I'd speculate that a lot of people can come up with things that would be more fulfilling to them if the worries were not there. Who's to say that ultimately their choices wouldn't provide even more value to society in that case? A lot of people have been trained by the current structure of society, so there would naturally be a transitional time where some would struggle to find purpose, but thinking they couldn't adapt doesn't put much faith in humanity.
Imagine a society that functions well, has shared abundance, and where success is defined by the quality and longevity of human lives. Plus the unhampered choice that citizens should have in their pursuits when those standard needs are met. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as that ultimate measure of our country. So what's the purpose of the government in this? Maybe moderating some of our collective bad side like selfishness? Pretty much what Bernie describes in the video that these corporations are practicing for the sake of more and more profit.
