I agree that Shad's points aren't exactly well made and the bias can be quite annoying. So I figured I should put my own instead. I see art as something more akin to a hobby. I'd say the same thing for making videos online or streaming or painting miniatures, playing TTRPG, Cosplaying, etc... it's amazing some people have the expertise to turn it into a career but in the end, the value of art depends on the culture... and culture will always change and adapt to new technologies. I'm sure we've all downloaded musics at some point, YT to Mp3 or whatever. instead of either buying it or paying to attend a show, etc... People will almost always prioritize the cheaper and more convenient option. Professional artist will never go extinct, there will always be a niche to fill. but the market and demand will shrink. This is something we have to accept and come to terms with. Screaming at a tornado or a volcano won't make it stop. Instead we have to look at what's going on and plan ahead the best we can. Hell... I'm an artist myself, I do 3D animations in Blender, some projects can take dozen or even hundreds of hours of works to finish. I spend a lot of time and effort in some projects, but I do it for the fun of it. I do it because I like tinkering around and I want to explore more ideas. I haven't found an AI tool that can do anything remotely close to what I like doing except maybe some features of Cascadeur. But I have difficulties with the whole "Ai art is Theft" I understand the main point, but if you post something on the internet for free, then you should expect people tinkering with it. At least, that's kind of how I've treated the internet, I always viewed it as the trade off. Practically speaking, once something is freely available you kind of lose ownership over it. Sure, legally copyright holders have the upper hand, but unless they have lots of time and money to waste in legal battles then it's an uphill battle which.... nobody wants to die on. The only time I would absolutely agree with the "theft" argument is if the art itself is behind a paywall and it was used or redistributed without paying for it. But the same can be said for music, movies, books, or any paid goods and services really. To me "Theft" needs a genuine quantitative loss, either revenus, pocessions, etc... Though, I'm willing to grant "Loss of career opportunities" even though I don't think that would count as theft. That's just business being cheap (as usual) Don't get me wrong. Using people's work (especially in a comercial venture) without their consent is a dick move for sure and it might be worth testing in a legal battle. Especially when it cost jobs of talented people, i'm with you on that. However, as stated earlier, I doubt most people want to die on that hill. But this entire argument about "theft" doesn't really have much merits to my eyes simply because the entire art culture as we know it wouldn't exist without it. At least, if we're being honest and not fall for double standard and hypocrisy we have to look at memes. The overwhelming majority of them are made by stealing copyrighted materials and redistributed everywhere. But that alone isn't really much of an argument, memes by themselves aren't a substitute for the original works. However, we have to look at it from the economic side, For instance there are websites or social medias, content farms, etc... whose entire business model is centered around hosting said memes or even parasiting over the original content and use advertisment for revenues, One can argue that they don't act as a substitution/replacement of the original art, Sure, I agree. but Substitution alone is a weak argument. If someone spoiled the end of a book or movie, that wouldn't count as substitute, but it will drive down the interests, hence potentially leading to fewer sales. Hence, their impact can be just as bad. Long story short, there is an entire economy around "stealing" yet, no one care. Heck, I'm not a big fan of generative AI, but that's mostly from a different angle. it has more to do with low quality nonsense that pollutes the internet which causes a significant drop in the overal experience of most websites. (I'm sure you know what I mean) Though, I'm not necessarily against it. I hope they simply becomes tools in the same way Photoshop or Blender are tools. Something more specialized would be interesting, I doubt we'll ever achieve a proper "Jack of all trade" Ai model due to limitations in training. Since AI rely on training data, they will always be limited in scope. it will be incredibly difficult or even outright impossible to generate things that appears contradictory to the AI itself An example you can check out yourself would be the "Full glass of wine" prompts, since the overwhelming majority of the training data used to define what "full" and "wine" together implies the traditional glass that is half full. As such, it can be difficult or even impossible to make the AI generate the wine overflowing with wine. I don't know if it has been "fixed" but it is a notable example of serious limits to AIs models simply because they aren't intelligent. I have to say though, I absolutely despise AI slops and I wish it would go away but that doesn't make AI itself bad. it's just people being lazy. Personally, I tend to use LLM like Chat GPT instead because I like to tinker around little ideas, helping me conceptualise things I lack the technical knowhow to make myself. But even then, it has some serious limitations which can make it infuriating at times. Plus, the code it generates isn't exactly optimized. In principle I could spend thousands of hours to improve my programming skills, I'll totally grant you that. But doing so takes valuable time away from other projects I see life kind of like a zero sum game. For every hours spent on something, it's time you lose somewhere else. Therefore the problem becomes more like a time management and priority calculus. Look at Cascadeur for instance. They're using AIs to generate fairly realistic keyframe animation for a 3D character, "sit here" 'walk over there" whatever... I think this has a lot of potential. Especially for indie filmakers and studios who don't have the time or money for intricate motion capture setups and animation. TL;DR I agree with you on multiple aspects, but the whole "theft" argument falls short, in my opinion. I don't want to dwelve too much into the moral arguments simply because I see them more as a form of emotional manipulation than genuine points which can easily fall into "whataboutism" territory I believe we have to adapt to an ever changing world. some will struggle more than others. but that's life. Personally, instead of branding it as theft, I'd be more in favor of something like "Unfair exploitation" or anything involving asymmetry in terms of power
