Your mistake is in assuming that human value comes predominantly from work, which is just capitalist propaganda 😅. Once basic needs have been provided for, free time is the most valuable thing we have and people don't value it enough. The Calhoun rat studies are dripping in trendy pop-psychology interpretations that go well above and beyond what the original study found. Additionally, like most rat studies, it doesn't appear it was reproducible in humans anyways - see Johnathen Freedman. On the UBI studies the problem is that they all focus on "does UBI increase economic output" which personally I couldn't care less - what we should look at is "does UBI increase human flourishing and provide positive health and well being outcomes" which it absolutely seems to do so. If it also had net positive economic benefits thats a good way to sell it, but only soulless corporations care more about the economic benefits than the human benefits. I have taken extended periods of time off work and I didn't become a hedonist or a cannibal. Instead I simply pursued my passions. I think there's many more like me. Additionally, if I were offered a promotion that had a big pay raise, but required longer hours, I'd decline it. Many of us DO value our free time outside of work, and may of us are able to see work for what it is, a means to an end, NOT the end all be all of meaning in our lives. I don't care what big corporations want you to believe, "stock price goes up" does not provide meaning to ones life, and for the same reason if AI were to steal our jobs, we should not lament the loss (again, once we figure out how to equitably provide for basic needs).
