This is unstoppable. Driverless trucks in the near future might create a demand for highly skilled truckers, but there will still be fewer truckers needed. The technology will dominate the industry as it is perfected, And most existing truck drivers need to start now getting themselves retrained for a new career.
The bottom line is this: It's not the truckers industry, it's the trucking industry. The industry exists to ship things from one place to another by truck not to employ truckers. Employing humans to drive trucks has been the standard for a long time. But when the drivers are no longer necessary, there's no reason to continue to pay them. And you can be sure that as soon as teleportation is perfected, the trucking industry won't need trucks either, and that'll be what it is.
The industry is shipping, not employing. Shipping involves getting an object from one place to another. The less expensive and more efficiently the company can do that, the more they will to stay competitive in the industry where all their competitors are doing the same. It's not hatred or disrespect. It's life.
