It's obvious people still have to have an income if/when this happens - but that doesnt mean to say it will happen. I'm retired now thankfully - but the type of job I trained for (ie secretarial work) was basically starting to disappear when I was still only in my 30's! I'm reasonably qualified for that type of work and was confidently expecting I'd have my choice of jobs in order to be able to get my due promotion. In the event though it was all I could do to get lower-level secretarial work. After lengthy spell of unemployment I got a lower level typing job in the Civil Service and thought they'd accept a responsibility to retrain us for the obvious forthcoming death of the type of work we did - they didnt. Neither the Government as Government - nor the government as my personal employer (as the Civil Service) accepted any responsibility basically. It proved very difficult to hang on in there until retirement - as they privatised the typing service, shoved people sideways into callcentre jobs and I never got promoted back to my own grade. It proved extremely difficult in the event to hang on in there till 60 and I had both lower-level status and lower-level pay than I'd already achieved elsewhere in order to hang onto a job at all. So gawdhelp those in the private sector then if there was such problems in the public sector. During the course of all this - I looked outside to see where I could find retraining courses (and suitable grant whilst doing so) for some other type of job and there was zilch. I just couldnt figure out a way to get a reasonable income whilst retraining for some other type of job and, by then, I had been in the workforce for some time and had a mortgage to pay anyway. But there was NO help and NO acknowledgment that I was prepared to retrain to cover having a job for the rest of my worklife. So I'm only too thankful I managed - just about and by skin of neck - to get through to retirement and my mortgage safely paid off - and really don't fancy the chances that people rendered jobless by AI would get any help whatsoever basically to still have a reasonable income.
