To understand why people are the way they are about this, it is important to understand how political this issue has become. A lot of people on the Right perceive artists as progressive, aloof and gatekeepy. Many prominent figures on the Right are failed theatre kids who didn't make it in an artistic field, especially in Hollywood. So there is a lot of resentment pent up in parts of the Right and many, consciously or subconsciously, see generative AI as a way to have their revenge and to "burn it all down" essentially, although they would probably frame it as the "democratisation of art," which is one way to put a positive spin on slop I suppose.
