Foundation models are great at summarising concepts, which means that they can’t think for us without any additional framework on top of it. Programming is essentially problem solving so right now we need to use AI as faster way to retrieve documentation but even that is not going to work if the dependency which the documentation is about is frequently updated as the AI need to be periodically relearnt.
The only way for AI to start proper reasoning is with AI agents which could continuously learn from its own mistakes. (Not just syntax errors but also availability, security,requirement changes etc.) Unfortunately this concept is not well understood just yet we need more research in this area.
