I do not claim to be a talented illustrator by any means, but what skill I do have sure didn’t come packaged with me at birth. I had to learn and work for the minimal art abilities I have today. Maybe every few years you’ll hear about a “gifted prodigy who learned to paint masterpieces at a young age,” but there is nobody in this world that was born with all of the knowledge needed to create great art on the first attempt. AI art isn’t an accessibility medium; it’s plagiarism, plain and simple. It is taking the work of other artists (ones that have spent years honing their craft, unlike people who use GenAI) and bastardizing it so whoever generated the image can say they made it. With how expensive GenAI subscriptions can be, I really think people are better off using that money and purchasing art lessons instead. There is no age limit for these art classes, either. I took a month’s worth of classes when I was 23, and in that class was also a 48 year old receptionist and a 16 year old high school student. I think every single person has the ability to learn how to create art, but so many people don’t have the patience to learn and instead just say that they were born without the gift. They’d rather pay a robot hundreds of dollars to steal someone else’s work so that they can pretend that they’ve made something. And the funniest thing about the whole thing is that the AI images still look bad, and you can clearly tell that they’re fake. All of this to say that even someone as untalented as myself will speak out against AI, because the one thing my art has that robots don’t is that I can say that **I** made my work.
