This was great video and much needed validation of my own thoughts. I've been a SE for about 25 years. I currently work in the games industry (which is a total mess right now) but have worked on software in many other industries like retail, banking, and utilities. I started looking into using LLMs about a year ago because I was waking up every morning with existential dread due to the flood of 'programmers are obsolete' news. I found that the more I learned, the more insane that talk seemed and exactly for the reasons you point out. One of the best real-talk statements that I have heard about AI replacing software engineers was: "Have AI maintain and update an entire legacy mainframe system, then maybe I'll start to worry".
I think LLMs are amazing tools but they are so hyped right now their real value gets lost. Yes, current AI can do many tasks that an entry level engineer can do. However, that entry level engineer will learn, grow, gain institutional knowledge and in a year or so be able to perform analysis and tasks that AI cannot do. I really wish companies would invest time into keeping and growing their engineers so they want to stay with the company as opposed to trying to replace them and creating an environment where they are always on the lookout for a fall-back job because they don't know when the axe will fall. That would grow and retain institutional knowledge and in the long run make for better products.
Thank you, this was great and reduced my anxiety just a bit :)
