I’ve seen artists get mad at other humans for “stealing their style,” and I get it. It sucks to see your style replicated and sometimes done even better to greater applause. When a machine owned by a billion dollar company does it- that’s not ok. I think this is the real crux of the argument, and it seems like all the other arguments are second to this. What makes it ok for a human to replicate Moebius’ style, but not AI? I think the best answer is that the speed at which AI can be trained on a style can put an artist out of commission before they’ve even had a chance to take off. Or cuts their creative-bill-paying-career in jeopardy. The answer lies in that AI is predatory, and actively hurts people. The same can be true of other humans, but it’s at a much smaller scale, that when done, actually creates a positive to the community.
