In Dune (Frank Herbert), humanity banned and destroyed all computers and “thinking machines” after the Butlerian Jihad – a massive war against artificial intelligence and intelligent machines that had come to dominate people.
After the Jihad, it became strictly forbidden to create machines "in the likeness of a human mind." Because of this, there are no computers in the Dune universe. Instead, humans developed extraordinary mental and physical disciplines to take over the roles once handled by machines.
