I'm probably not be deep enough into AI but to me as an informatics student AI in its current state looks like a human-unreadable form of fancy algorithms. The rules on wich they respond to input are just more abstract than in a traditional algorithm written by a human.
I think it is undeniable that the fear about AI comes by a big part from these things being hard or even impossible to comprehend and that we have to trust those people working on AI to be smart enough to not build skynet. .. and autonomous weapons are definitely a step towards skynet! so the fear is justified I guess.
