I love these short informative videos and I agree with the general principles -- we need to ensure there's still a way for ordinary, working-class people to survive this tremendous transformation. But I don't think manufacturing in the traditional sense will ever come back, nor do I think we can force it to. Even without AI, efficiency has reduced the need for jobs in manufacturing. The US has greater real manufacturing output now than it ever did in the 70s, but spread across fewer jobs. If you need to get brain surgery, if the machine can do a better job with a lower risk to life, would you worry about the neurosurgeon's economic stability? I think this example is already real in the case of autonomous trucks, which can ensure fewer lives lost on the roads due to tired, distracted, or incautious truck drivers (I'm not sure this is true for all brands, but given that it will be ...). I agree wholeheartedly with reforms like the 32-hour workweek -- we need to negotiate a new society in which not everyone has to work because not everyone will be needed. The current system sacrifices people as soon as they are unnecessary, but I hope that when a critical mass of people of all occupations are suddenly obsolete, that this is no longer true. It doesn't reflect on the importance or ethics of efficiency and robotics that our current society is set up to betray people as soon as they are replaced. We can't force people to go back to handmade iPhones, not to mention the unethical business practices laborers are currently under that will be gone after the switch to robotics. This could be a painful transition and we need leadership like yours to get us through this.
