Understandably, there is a lot of hate towards generative AI. While I absolutely support having AI training data that is ethically sourced, and no doubt that majority of the profit form AI will end up I the hands of corporations, which is a huge concern. At the same time, there is also an important fact that AI is a technology that spans as wide as how "internet" as a technology. Just as you wouldn't ban the internet because child porn is available somewhere, generative AI art is but a sliver of what AI is all about. The core of AI is machine learning, and you can make computers do amazing things based on patterns you want the computer to do. This include things like finding cancer from CT scans, folding proteins to create new cures, autonomous driving, and the list goes on. There actually will be huge leap in our understanding of the world and a lot of amazing tools that will make our lives better, as well as making us learn any subject a lot faster than any classroom ever could. At the same time, AI is hugely transformative in the sense that it is also capable of displacing countless jobs by making a few of us hyper productive so that one operator could replace 10 manual workers as an example. This will hugely disrupt how a country see gauge its GDP, how a country should collect its taxes moving forward, and how we as citizens need to change our actions to bring meaning to our lives. We humans will adapt and we will find our way out, but adaptation usually is reserved for the young with the mental capacity and energy. I guess my point is that it's detrimental to keep pointing at AI as some soul-less machine here to make things miserable. Much like the Internet, AI is going to be used everywhere and lives will be changed. Learning to live with it, makes our lives better with it, and leverage it for opportunities is one of many paths we can choose to move forward.
