Interesting interview, he's obviously a very intelligent man and he's does highlight the potential dangers of AI very clearly. Of course they are just dangers, there is just as much chance that machines will learn to love humans, the way we love dogs, or perhaps more likely than anything, they will just do neither. There is no good reason to leap to the assumption that they will want to harm us or wipe us out, the truth is we just don't know. but he's also clearly biased and very stuck in his own importance and in his very extensive understanding of technology. But he also actually exists in one of the echo chambers he's talking about and doesn't even realise it.. He made some very accusationary comments about Elon Musk that I can say with a large amount of certainty are untrue and I can debunk them. He also makes statements about consciousness of which he clearly knows little about, himself, intelligent people can be dangerous when they start to believe their own BS. He obviously hasn't studied meditation at all because if he had, he would have experience and evidence that some of things he is saying about consciousness are just plain wrong. Even intelligent people can be ignorant when they ignore half of the argument and walk past it because it's not scientific.. Indeed, in order to concentrate his mind on what he has done, he probably has to disregard non scientific elements of human beings. He will find out what conscience is and he will find out that he is wrong about this, it will happen when he dies. Very clever, blinkered man. All of this being said I do agree that we should build safety into AI, that is a given and that was Elon Musks very first intention, indeed, 30% of the cost of Chat GPT was invested into security and safety before Elon Musk left, it's only since he left that funding and corners have been cut,, this guy really needs to check himself and his bias and stop reading the sanctimonious Guardian, it isn't the source of all truth, it's actually the intellectual lefties equivalent of the daily mail. The guardian is one of those echo chambers he is talking about.
