I used facial recognition software in the past. Long hair, facial hair, hats, all kinds of things could result in a “possible match”. I don’t know how technology has improved in that department but it seems pretty sketchy to make an arrest solely from a facial recognition match. Also…. What happened to appearing in front of a magistrate within 24 hours of arrest? If it was a weekend, he should have been in front of the magistrate at a maximum of 72 hours. Edit: I did some research. Quran was arrested on a warrant from Louisiana for stealing purses. His name also apparently matched the wanted suspect. Riddle me this: If the Louisiana police had his name and face, didn’t they have things like fingerprints and scars/marks/tattoos? If not, how did they know it was him? The name is not totally unique. Did that Louisiana detective get a warrant solely from AI? Louisiana didn’t have anything else on this purse thief but his face? An example: I arrest Joe Blow. I fingerprint him and submit his fingerprints through AFIS. I may get a record/records back matching those fingerprints. That’s done by a computer. After receiving the records, part of my job is verifying the information matches the Joe Blow. Height, weight, eye color, scars, tattoos, residences, etc. I have had “verified matches”, these were looked at by a human being, a more rigorous examination than a computer, be false. AI is a tool to be used by humans. It appears that no laws are currently in place for what a match by facial recognition means legally. This needs to be fixed.
