Yeah... posting “AI art has no soul” with a Studio Ghibli-coded image is basically yelling “COME RATIO ME” into a megaphone. Then he doubled down with persecution narratives and superiority claims. At that point it stopped being about art and became about him. Spiral unlocked.
But 22 million views with mediocre likes isn’t “the community rising up.” It’s outrage circulation. The post hit a nerve, got quote-retweeted to hell, and the algorithm did what it always does: shove conflict into everyone’s face. Quote-reply dunking is amplification.
And the mob is actively feeding the thing it claims to be killing. Posting Up, anime cuts, hand-drawn redraws, “pick up a pencil,” etc. isn’t reasoning. It’s identity performance. “Look, I am on Team Human Art.” Likes are social rewards for reaffirming group membership, not for making coherent points.
None of this makes a real difference to the commercial art market, which is what artists actually depend on to pay bills. The scarcity it relied on, is basically fucked, and that part is likely irreversible. Generative AI punched a hole straight through the middle of it. Not all of it, obviously, but a large chunk of the filler-type work — the “I just need 20 forest backgrounds” kind of jobs.
And this doesn’t end by “stopping AI.” Even if every big corporation face-plants tomorrow, nothing fundamental changes. Open-weight models exist. You can run them on a gamer rig. Need more power? Throw more GPUs at it. I can download a model, grab a LoRA for a style I like, and run it locally. Any indie studio that wants cheap backgrounds or filler assets can already do this. The tech isn’t going away.
P.S. I’m not even arguing for or against AI here. I’m just pointing at the underlying reality beneath all the hopeful fluff. Unless someone manages to ban linear algebra, computing or GPUs (which seems… unlikely) this stays.
P.P.S. Yes, this was formatted with ChatGPT. I’m not a native English speaker, I’m not masochistic enough to write something this long on a phone, and using AI for accessibility really shouldn’t be controversial. I’m mentioning it upfront because the number of times someone has replied with “this sounds like AI” is honestly staggering. If you want to respond, engage with the points I’m making, not the tool used to format them.
