I am, admittedly, not an artist. I do not make visual arts, I cannot draw, I cannot paint, etc. for that reason, I do not claim to have much skin in the game when it comes to AI art. But that doesn't mean I'm going to go around making a bunch of generative AI art and claiming that I am now an amazing artist. I do utilize some generative art things, but it's mostly for personal amusement and entertainment. I'm not going to go around saying that I'm now a master artist just because I had a robot generate a bunch of pictures for me based on a bunch of other people's hard work. The thing that always gets me about the whole AI debacle when it comes to people arguing over it, is that in a lot of cases the issue becomes that the defenders are defending every single part of it no matter what regardless of who is using it or how, and I think that really minimizes a lot of the issues around it. There are a lot of problems with how it's used and how people are treating it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that technology around AI systems is 100% bad. The issue is that a lot of these big defenders don't actually even think that far. They don't actually think about how AI could be used to assist people or help or do useful things, they just think that it is the new future and therefore everything it does must be perfect. It's the same reason why a bunch of them will defend this whole wave of the tech bro culture without even realizing the problems behind most of these people and individuals, and this is how they get dragged into so many schemes and scams. the entire nft and crypto nonsense was basically built on these people being taken advantage of and effectively displaying how much they've been scammed proudly as if it's some sort of achievement. AI can be fun and interesting and I think people should see it as something that can be an interesting form of entertainment, or a potential tool in the future for computing and repetitive operations and the like which could actually trim down some annoyances of life, but trying to claim that it's just going to replace all arts and creativity is not only absurd, but also incredibly depressing even if it was true. Also, as someone who has studied advertisement and psychology surrounding that, those ads for Google Gemini are actually cringe and make me feel physical pain.
