I'm a former CS professor who taught AI, so I have a bit of knowledge on this. We WILL be seeing a 10 to 20% unemployment rate within the next 5 years tops, Great Depression level stuff. e.g. The trucking industry is the "canary in the coal mine" for economists. It's the perfect storm of: Scale: Over 3.5 million drivers. It's the biggest sector employer for non-college educated men in the United States. Demographics: A middle-aged workforce with specific skill sets. Hard to retrain, and companies won't want to hire and train men who only have 10 to 15 years left until retirement. Economics: The massive incentive for logistics companies to eliminate their highest variable cost. THAT is the perfect storm, and within 5 years automated semi trucks will be the norm, 10 years tops. We WILL need a basic universal income, and of course the GOP will fight that because it will be the burgeoning profits of corporations saving so much money that will need to finance a BUI. And who prey tell will be paying into Social Security with no workers?
