You don't know who Shad Brooks is? Man that is one heck of a rabbit hole to dive into. And he absolutely tried to steal an artists work and pretend it was AI, that guy has absolutely no shame. While I was watching this video, I'm hand painting a sign for a stall I'll be running at a convention. I haven't drawn anything this in depth for at least a decade. For the days I've been working on it, all the old arguments that put me off being an artist in the first place keep swimming in my head. It's surprising how much what I went through in the art world back then mirrors the AI arguments now. My art teacher at GSCE telling me my art was too detailed and I'd never pull of the 10 hours I have in the exam if I didn't make my art simplier (like his). My Design teacher telling me that my work was too bright, too complex. That I had to tone it down and make a single "statement" or my logos would never be successful. The one year of art I did at degree level, telling my tutor what I wanted to do and him just blinking at me and telling me he "didn't get it." And always, always the advice was to give up my uniqueness, to read this art or that artist and try to bring my art style more in line with theirs. That my works had to fit a certain mould to be saleable in the art world, like capitalism was the only reason fine art existed. Why spend two days sorting out the perfect hand drawn circle and putting the lettering in when I could do that digitally in a few hours? Why spend days planning and drawing and outlining and painting, when I could just write a ten minute prompt and call it a day? The answer I gave then is the same as it is now. Because I'm an artist, because I enjoy the process. This sign is going to be bright, it's going to pop with colour, you'll be able to see it from the opposite end of the aisle. And it's mine, it's all mine, all of it came from me and my years of experiencing art and finding my own style. It's unique and it's different and it's fun and I'm enjoying making it. To me, that's precisely what being an artist is all about. Sorry for the rant, it just hit right where I was in my head space right now. Also have a new subscriber. Can't wait to see the face reveal.
