Another example of racist AI: So here in The Netherlands we have a lot of different allowances. If you get a child, you can get money from the government regardless what your income is. If you lost your job, you can get money. If you never had a job, you can get money. If you can't have a job (anymore), you get money. If you reach the age of 67 years you get money. If you can't pay your rent, you get money. If you can't pay your insurance, you can get money. Now, this system has resulted in numerous cases of fraud. In order to stop that from happening, our government made the rules stricter. This means that you need a lot of proof that you need money before you actually get it. The thought behind this is to make sure the money only gets to where it is needed but in practice it means that the slightest error in your paperwork (school doesn't teach you how to do this paperwork) can result in serious dept. This whole system of allowances is rather complicated. Just imagine if you go to university. You and your roommates can get subsidy for your house on the campus, the cost of your education, you can lend money from the government for your education and there are countless more allowances that you are eligible for. Of course you don't want to miss out on free money but on the other hand, every allowance brings paperwork that must be treated with the same seriousness as you would treat your taxes. If you have never encountered things like this before, you will make errors. Now this is of course ridiculous but it isn't the worst. Here in The Netherlands it is quite common for a child to go to daycare a couple of times per week. The people that work in daycare are usually really nice, kids get to play and socialize and the daycare makes it possible for both parents to have a job. It isn't free though. Fortunately, the government will compensate a lot of this money. But if the parents make a slight error while doing the needed paperwork, they will get in serious trouble. These papers are checked so insanely meticulously that if your forms would ever be checked you are almost certain to be convicted of fraud. In fact, they're checked so meticulously that the government can't actually check all cases, it simply doesn't have the resources to do so. Instead the government uses AI to mark "suspicious cases" and then they only check those. Other cases are also checked but much less thoroughly. Now this AI targeted mostly families with a lower income and a foreign name. These lower class families aren't really a match for the bloodthirsty army of government lawyers. That's probably how this whole ordeal has been able to stay under the radar for so long. It is estimated that a few thousands of families were wrongfully convicted of fraud. Families that fell victim were told that they had to pay sometimes as much as €100.000. Some of their cases could've been fought in court but it has rarely happened. Now most of these families don't have €100.000 just laying around. Having to pay so much money all of a sudden has ruined people's lives. Most of these families lost their house and everything they owned. If you work for the government and you're convicted of fraud, you'll likely loose your job. If you don't have a house, a car, have been convicted of fraud and have dept to the government, it won't do any good for employment prospects either. And if you don't have a house, no job and you are emotionally, mentally and physically miserable/unstable, the government doesn't see you fit as a parent for your children. Just imagine someone taking away everything you own and then taking your kids too. The worst part is that the government tried desperately to keep this from the public. The then reigning parties (vvd, d66, cda and ChristenUnie) tried to block a research to the matter. Eventually we did get some answers like the estimated number of victims. But not who are responsible and who are the victims. The victims have received little compensation. There're still children waiting to get back to their parents and it's still not entirely clear whether this matter has actually stopped.
