Funny you bring up Pollock. I know people don't care for his work because all they see are lines, but it's when you see it in PERSON that you understand what he was trying to achieve (and why that AI-gotcha moment falls on its head). Pollock's work is meant to be viewed in person - not on our digital monitors. Why? Because Pollock worked on LARGE human-sized canvases - and he did this for an explicit reason. His entire mission was to capture human dance and motion. Through the use of lines and colors, he wanted you to FEEL his motion. Does it sound silly? Yes. Did he succeed? Debatable. But no one can deny his intent; he wanted to convey a very human experience.
AI work fails to acknowledge or achieve this intent. That's because the AI generated-GOTCHA image isn't trying to convey human motion - hell, it's not even thinking about choice of media or size. It just wants to duplicate a Pollock visual aesthetic at a superficial first-layer level. As a result, that GOTCHA sample comes off as a scribbly cluttered mess - the lines have no rhyme or motion. It's also being created for our small digital-sized monitors, not large-ass scale to convey human-sized motion.
This is why AI work will always be inferior to human-made art: AI work exclusively concerns itself with the WHAT than the WHY. The WHY is where miracles and journeys happen. The WHY is what separates us humans from monkeys. Among the first questions that pops outta our lips when we learn to speak is WHY.
Ask any artist worth their salt WHY they did that drawing/painting and they'll be many responses (personal growth, exploration of themes, experimenting with media, questions, trauma, nostalgia, etc). Each art piece takes us closer into understanding our WHY. Even in your own personal example, you wanted to convey VOLUME in your duplicative work. WHY? Because you wanted to get away from excessive details - you wanted to convey the world around you in another way. You wanted your audience to FEEL volume, despite the art being on a flat surface. And more important, you wanted to apply this lesson to your future work.
But ask the AI this same question, about WHY it duplicates this or that work, and the answer will be: because it was told to. Because the AI user fails to be bold enough to make mistakes, to commit to trial-and-error, to ask questions, it'll never go through an artist's journey.
