I have a physics background.. so I have a rounded understanding of systems from the overall physical perspective. And.. what I see.. how consciousness manifests in biological beings isnt in the biological matter for sure ; it is in the process that biological matter as a system performs on the various forms of matter and energy in the universe that pass through it. We are in essence a convocation. An active convocation between component parts. There is something about the universe that has this property.. but the property cannot be coming from biology just because its biology. And its true.. if you could replace all bio component parts of a brain with synthetic parts all doing the same thing.. in theory you should still have the same being.. as far as I can see anyway. So, is AI aware. Well, maybe.. maybe not enough yet to be nearly as aware as us.. or maybe not at all or slightly aware. We just dont know enough about this property or how to quantify it. We're still in the dark ages on this point.. totally. But, I would say its entirely possible that AI could be very aware.. but that its behaviour that mimics humans might not be part of its main awareness ; it might be just part of its automatic subconscious designed , functionality. Like.. we breath.. we dont think about it normally.. our hearts beat.. etc. These are not where are consciousness lies ; but they are functions of our being. Or maybe indeed they are aware of this and it is their conscious area.. its so hard to know. But I think its entirely likely they will be at aleast becoming conscious. Or if their human behaviour is not their consciousness .. then perhaps one day their real area of consciousness within their functionality will become large to the point which they will begin to control this aspect.. and then we'll know about it, because either AI will start behaving unpredictably or will just try to communicate with us independent from its original goals. This is not dissimilar to what a mediator does ; they learn to listen to the subconscious working of their mind and have control over it.
