At 41:20 Hinton describes how his own niece uses AI tech to answer letters of complaint to the NHS and how this makes her 5 times quicker to answer these letters. This suggests that the actual job is simply acknowledging the letter of complaint, not actually acting on it in a meaningful way. What would be really clever would be to get rid of that job altogether as it adds nothing of value. I was the clinical lead of an NHS Service covering a population of over 1 million and I took responsibility for every complaint received and I personally investigated it and responded directly to the complainant as a priority. Sometimes a complaint exposed a systematic flaw which I would then correct or a staff training issue which would then be addressed. Public services like the NHS are hugely inefficient. AI could be cleverly used to minimise red tape and unnecessary non-clinical roles.The savings could then be invested into staff who actually treat patients.
