I often compare AI to a knife: in the hands of a chef, it helps prepare meals; in the hands of a criminal, it can do harm. In societies where human well-being is the central focus, AI will be used as a tool to improve lives. But in societies driven primarily by wealth and profit, the same tool will be exploited by the powerful to dominate others. Typically, the profit-oriented private sector will seize the opportunity to utilize AI to maximize profits, laying off as many employees as possible and hiring very few, if any. This is where governments must intervene, through thoughtful regulation, to protect their citizens. But if the government itself is replacing workers with AI, what should we expect from the private sector? And no job is immune. Just a couple of years ago, truck drivers were the ones freaking out. Who could have guessed that white collar software engineers would be among the first to be hit the hardest? It is coming for most (if not all) of our jobs.
