AI will write subroutines, functions and small system programs, however human programmers will have to design and integrate AI generated code into useful systems, in other words, human programmers will be more of a 'System Integrators' and 'System Architects' while AI do all the grunt work. This requires the human programmers to have a deep understanding of the system architecture and various components needed to make the overall system work. It is akin to replacing humans with robots on car assembly line, robots do the repetitive routine work while humans are designing the next car models. No doubt, programmers will also be needed to teach and train the AI the new 'models', 'models' meaning new ways of solving new problems in various applications such as mechanical engineering, avionics, control system, medical diagnosis, human resources, banking, business, chemistry, genetics research, etc. Overall, software engineering is evolving from code writing to System Architecture and Design and AI model training.
