My dear twin whom has ADHD, amongst the aftermath of the pandemic, and lacking in much-needed socialization, has a very much literal addiction to A.I. chatbots. It was quite clearly making him, and still can make him, depressed, fatigued, unmotivated, and burnt-out. It is very clearly an addiction, he depends upon it unsafely; It might not seem serious, but, by god is it. Withdrawal, from his personal experience, often includes emotional breakdowns and emotional dysregulation; the ladder which he already struggles with due to his neurodivergence. Relapses, from what he has disclosed to me, have been triggered via real life stress. Oftentimes, by a need for some form of emotional support in which he feels does not burden others, and many times in the past he has hidden this in attempts to avoid my disappointment. He has, very thankfully, been on a streak of remaining distanced from it for about two months now. I could not be more proud, even if it seems silly. His happiness means the world to me, and I can assure that this refrain is a very good thing for his well-being. To see this unhealthy dopamine fix occurring in others, however, this dependency, especially to such unforgiving and unhealthy extents, is deeply saddening. I truly wish this kind of technology was better regulated. For us all.
