Kia ora from NZ. Firstly I want to say that I absolutely love listening to your podcasts Steven. I wanted to chime in on the light hearted “find a bunker or move to NZ” comment. A gentle reminder: our country isn’t a backup plan if things go sideways. We’re only five million people, and the main reason we’re doing ok (mostly) is because we’re not overpopulated and have traditionally been strongly democratic... although even that’s feeling the strain with global pressures creeping in.
My 2 cents worth: AGI won’t just disrupt jobs; it risks eroding people’s sense of purpose, reason, worth. AI has already started that shift. So when I hear some of the major voices racing to 'win', I do find myself wondering: why the obsession? (although I know the answer to this). And to be clear, this isn’t a personal attack, it’s just an observation that it isn’t the everyday working or middle class pushing this. The people driving this race need a serious reality check about their motivations.
