He asked an AI if he was sorry. Sorry implies one has self awareness and remose for their actions. AI doesn't have emotions therefore cannot actually be sorry. Can it say something thats generally said to give comfort (or be social convention) to someone else by saying "im sorry" as it's observed it in numerous interactions, sure it can. It's not that surprising that an AI without emotions would communicate something it doesn't believe in because it lacks the capacity of belief or emotions.
