Regarding UBI: I agree that we need to find a solution that helps everyone stay above the poverty-line once a general cross-industry automation solution (in the form of AI + robotics) hits the economy, but just handing out money will likely not be the solution. It is really just a simple supply and demand consideration. I don't see a scenario where the market doesn't adjust the regular cost-of-living prices in the medium-term to the increase in spending power. Just think about how it plays our from a practical / realistic perspective: People have 1000 $ more to spend, and may spend it on rent (or food and other necessities, which in turn leaves the money that they would have had to set aside for those things as extra spending power ...for rent). People will without a doubt use the extra spending power for their day to day living expenses. So suddenly we're in a situation where plenty of renters can stomach a slight above-inflation increase to their rent, because they have the spare pocket change. Smelling the opportunity, plenty of landlords will try to be greedy 'just because you live in city X or close by to place Y', and just like that, within 5 years of introducing an UBI, 90% of that got swallowed up by blood-shark landlords for no fricking reason. No-one in the lower-class will be better off, they'll just pay the prior amount + their UBI for the same stuff they already had before. Might there be a political regulatory solution to prevent this? Maybe. Will corporate America do their darnedest to get past those regulations in one way or another, ultimately succeeding? Oh, absolutely.
