Covid was real. People died, health systems broke. But on a systems level it was also a 3 year stress test in how fast you can 1)switch whole sectors “off” with a press conference, 2) replace wages with drip fed money from above, 3) tie both work and survival to rules, apps and portals you do not control. And that is the lucky version. A lot of people did not get saved by stimulus. They fell through the cracks, lost businesses, homes, marriages, mental health. Many crawled back into whatever was left, factories, warehouses, delivery, low paid “essential” work. Now those same fallback jobs are being lined up for automation, and AI is still basically at version 0.1. At the same time we are being told, “Do not worry, new sectors will open up.” Real question: who actually gets to move into those new sectors? The burned out 45 year old who has already been wiped once, or the 23 year old who grew up inside this tech? And what happens to the millions who cannot just go back to school and reinvent themselves on command? You do not need a conspiracy to see where this goes: 1) a minority moves into the new high leverage jobs, 2) everyone else lives on low wage scraps or a programmable allowance. Serious question, in that world, where your job can vanish twice in one lifetime and your safety net is a digital stipend that can be adjusted or revoked, what does it even mean to say you are free?
