The issue which no one really seems to be thinking about is that once most jobs can be done by AI or robots for one thousandth of the cost of paying humans to do it, capitalism as we know it will collapse because no one will have money to buy goods. So companies that make products will have no one to sell them to... What happens then?
I think the concept of basic universal income, if it is ever implemented, would have to be a government policy that effectively taxes AI and robots to pay people a living wage even if they are not working. The tech bros are not going to like being heavily taxed so will fight it tooth and nail. But as we have seen in the US recently, these billionaires are so powerful that they can control not only government policy, but even which government gets elected.
So I think the most likely outcome, in the short term at least, would be something like the Great Depression of the 1930's where many people were homeless. In the longer term who knows...
