I started substitute teaching recently. I am 42 and when I was a kid we had very little tech in the classroom, and what little we had did add an extra level to the understanding, especially for science. Imagine my shock when I walked into a classroom and found every child was openly using their Chromebook to play games, watch TV shows, chat with their friends, or ask Google AI for the answers on their assignments without even trying to hide from me what they were doing. Every class was like this. One kid told me there was supposed to be limitations with websites mostly blocked but they all knew the workaround to play Among Us or Friday Night Funkin’, watch streaming, etc. I am not allowed to even touch the teacher’s computer when I sub, and the kids weren’t allowed to use their phones as if it even mattered. I felt powerless and sad for the few students who did their work and genuinely wanted to learn. There is no way kids going to school to play games on their Chromebooks, aka their SCHOOL ISSUED DIGITAL TEXTBOOKS, are learning squat. My daughter is 7 and gifted but I worry she will not reach her full potential in this environment.
