Short term? During the Industrial Revolution, the middle class experienced around 50 years of high unemployment, displacement, high inflation, rising crime, loss of identity and more - and yes, eventually things got better. The point is, for someone entering the work force, 50 years was their entire working life. Even if AI is a fraction of the impact, this is an extremely non-trivial concern. The transformation ahead is likely enormous, in a world where governments are increasingly reluctant or capable of providing a social safety net. And therein lays the problem.
