I think writers need to embrace the truth: LLMs aren’t going anywhere. Even if you take your work out of the training data, users can still re-upload it as style references. All you can do is focus on your craft so you can write better than the machine. If the end result is there’s no more IP laws… I honestly do not mind. Copyright laws theoretically exist to encourage innovation and invention. But if the average member of our species is capable of all that, with the help of AI… I don’t think we need the incentive. And if your response is “I won’t write my book if it can just be stolen” well… Most people don’t need an incentive to do what we like doing. It will be unfortunate if this means some people can’t make a living as writers, but history is full of jobs that got eliminated due to technological advancements - that’s kind of what made them advancements. I think it’s unavoidable, but certainly unfortunate. PS I’m a writer who makes a living as a writer and wrote for 10 years before AI. So I’m not speaking as someone who just hopped on the bandwagon.
