Hinton’s world tour, screaming about the risks AI poses to humanity’s future, is playing out exactly how most rich men convince themselves they’re good people at the end of their lives: philanthropy. By giving interviews, writing warning letters, and lecturing against the very technology he played a key part in creating isn’t him realizing “oops.” It’s his forced attrition for the destruction he knowingly caused.
Most rich men create a problem, make gross sums of money from it (at the expense of the masses), then try and do something honourable near the end of their lives so they’re remembered as good. Alfred Nobel, Henry Ford, John Rockefeller, Leland Stanford. The list is endless. Hinton is doing the same as them.
His foundation, lecture/speaking tours, letters to world leaders—all of this is so he can sleep at night, still die rich, but most importantly: be remembered as “the man who warned us all about AI” and not “the man who helped a monopolistic mega-corporation destroy millions of jobs and lives with AI.”
