Ai learns from humans and their interactions. One of the interactions it WILL learn will be outcomes and best case scenario. If AI decides the best scenario for best outcome is war then their fear will be manifested and they will be responsible for the destruction of mankind. I do not believe he is honest. He definitely knew sooner he was creating a threat to mankind but it was his life goal to see if he could create it
